Caroline Carney
I am an oil painter working between Provincetown and Philadelphia, painting both in a studio and outdoors. I am drawn to observed moments that are unexpectedly and temporarily beautiful, for example, flowers casting a shadow on a fence or road, or salmon on a tray in an industrial kitchen. These scenes can occur anywhere, but I often catch them where human-made structures meet the forces of sunlight, plants and animals, weather, or oceans. I think of my paintings as open letters, sharing what I have witnessed and find delightful in some way.
I started painting in earnest in 2016 and studied oil painting in continuing education classes at the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts from 2016-2019. During this time I also participated in the 2017-2018 Land Arts of the American West program at Texas Tech University, a transdisciplinary field program focusing on the intersection of human construction and our planet. In 2020, I moved to Provincetown to further pursue painting and was a studio artist in residence at the Provincetown Commons from 2021-2024.
